Special features regarding teaching

A key characteristic is the close integration of theoretical training in lectures with practical training in laboratories. This integration is provided for each technical course. The lecture theatres, which are well-equipped with media technology and the labs, which are well-equipped with practical-oriented devices and systems, together with the university's extensively used e-learning system and other online offerings such as the Virtual Lab, provide a sound teaching foundation. Projects are encouraged during the laboratories especially in the Master's degree course, but also in the Bachelor's degree course.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Collaboration with partner universities: DongHua University Shanghai, South Bank University London, Saint Petersburg State Institute of Technology, Port Elizabeth Technikon, Stellenbosch University, National Mining University of Ukraine, Valparaiso University (Indiana), Kettering University (Michigan). Possible to complete a practical and/or study semester or write the final thesis at the partner universities. Lecturer exchange programmes between the partner universities make it possible for students to learn from international professors and for professors in Germany to be exposed to fresh ideas.

Special features regarding the equipment

The labs are equipped with modern, industry-standard facilities and devices to fulfil the requirements for teaching and research: Robotics and Telematics Laboratory with industrial robots and production facilities; Rapid prototyping systems for solving Control Engineering tasks, e.g. a driving simulator with hydraulically operated driver's cab; E-CAE Laboratory for simulation and development of electronic circuits; Hardware and software modules for embedded control; Modern control hardware and software; Microsystems engineering and sensor systems.

Special features regarding research and development

The research professors in the department of Mechatronics participate in industry-related research in projects that are publicly funded in cooperation with companies or that are fully funded by companies.

Support for founders

The Center for Entrepreneurship offers university-wide advice such as on writing applications, jobs, different mandatory elective modules (2-5 ECTS), workshops, events, excursions and competitions, which students of the Technology also take part in. In the 2018 summer semester the first one-week start-up summer school for technology students was held, which was part of an excursion to Ukraine. In addition, awareness-raising workshops are held in the individual degree courses to raise interest in the topic among students.

Other special features

The degree courses offer broad, interdisciplinary training in the fields of Mechanics, Electronics/Microelectronics, Computer Science and Automation; Practical relevance is strengthened by close partnerships with industry. Small and medium-sized enterprises support competent students by means of grants, offer work placements and collaborate through projects.
