Special features regarding teaching

Very good student-professor supervision ratio of approx. 15 (as at 2015); subject-specific and interdisciplinary programmes to increase the success rate: online preliminary Mathematics course, mentoring by professors (4-6 in a group), preparatory courses (8-12 in a group), study skills; Mechanical engineering students live on campus: close to the laboratories, efficient studies particularly when completing final theses; ILIAS e-learning portal integrated into the teaching; Small-group concept: group size of approx. < 20 for calculation exercises; specialisation labs: approx. 3-10.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The faculty maintains a small number of intensive contacts with recognised foreign universities (Australia, USA, France, Brazil, Poland, Norway), which allows an exchange to be meaningfully incorporated into the degree course. The respective stays abroad are individually planned and designed to ensure they can be seamlessly integrated into the intensive study programme.

Special features regarding the equipment

The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering has very good technical equipment in the laboratories so as to be able to offer all students practical training at the same time. As students on intensive study programmes are also required to complete their final theses within a certain time period, the availability of the test equipment must be maximised and, in particular, high-quality technical equipment is required, and this is ensured. Since the research projects are also carried out in the same laboratories, the students are often directly involved in this work.

Special features regarding research activities

The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering undertakes both basic research, which is often publicly funded, and industrially funded contract research. The interaction between these two areas together with the large number of contacts that the professors have with major, leading industrial companies allow for a variety of fundamental and practice-based research activities. Thanks to third-party-funded activities in particular, students have the opportunity to gain initial experience in cooperation with industrial companies, which is highly beneficial for their professional careers later on.
