Special features regarding teaching

Our professors identify with the Business Information Systems group, which students immediately notice. Almost professors teach exclusively at Business Informatics. We offer students personal support by a motivated and committed team of experienced practitioners. Our teaching is personal and we opt for small groups and a large exercise component. We use digital elements as support. The relationship between students and professors is straightforward and friendly. The committed departmental student body also makes a valuable contribution.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Offer of short stays abroad (for a trial, e.g. 2-4 weeks). Currently 5 double degrees in Bachelor and 2 in Master, also to universities. This does not only promote internationalism, but it also simplifies access to a PhD position. We have 12 international university partners, even without a joint degree. The German-French University Institute of the htw Saar (DFHI) is a unique selling point in the German-speaking area. Overall, the regional location of Saarbrücken is optimal within the context of internationalism.

Exchange universities for stay abroads

Chinesisch-Deutsche Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften in Tongji, China; Lisboa School of Economics & Management, Portugal; Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, Mexiko; Technical University in Lodz, Polen; Clemson University, Clemson, South Carolina, USA; LAB University of Applied Science, Finnland; Saxion University of Applied Science, Niederlande; University West in Trollhättan, Schweden; Universidade de Vigo, Spanien; Metropolia UAS, Helsinki, Finnland.

Special features regarding the equipment

Technical equipment in automation, manufacturing technologies, robotics, IT, logistics and Industry 4.0 is already integrated in the courses (learning workshops). Access to specific publications, also online (yes, via the library). In addition: The faculty has modern equipment in the classrooms and there are group work islands outside the lecture halls. The faculty also operates a media workshop, the logistics teaching lab & the Industrial Engineering Model Factory 4.0 for practical, application-oriented teaching.

Special features regarding research activities

Professors in the Faculty of Economics are involved in the research focus areas of the university in various ways according to the Research Map of the German Rectors’ Conference (HRK). The research focus areas of the University of Applied Sciences in Saarbrücken (htw saar) are "Robustness, Efficiency and Sustainability of Processes", "Interfaces" and "Transitions in the Course of Life". In the years 2019 to 2021, research and transfer projects amounting to EUR 5.5 million were carried out in a large number of institutions and the Institute for Technology Transfer at the htw saar.

Support for founders

Award-winning series of lectures by the faculty "Start-ups and New Business Models"; EXIST network; Good network of regional companies. Working Group Wirtschaft Freunde e.V. (Friends of Business) of the University of Applied Sciences in Saarbrücken (htw saar) (AHW E.V.) regularly organises events involving companies on the subject of starting a company. htw saar has established a Centre for SMEs. The promotion of entrepreneurship is an explicit part of the faculty. In 2022, a professorship for Entrepreneurship was established. The faculty actively supports the university-wide start-up project "Places2X".

Other special features

The mission statement of the faculty is applied in practice and directly addresses sustainability and diversity (and there is the Diversity lecture series); Combination of interdisciplinary skills in ONE separate Computer Science section (instead of a matrix organisation). This results in a very close exchange among staff; Good contacts in industry; Memberships include the VWI (German Association for Engineering Management), VDI (Association of German Engineers), FFBT WI (Faculty and Departmental Conference for Industrial Engineering) (active working member); High proportion of female students; Successful re-audit of internationalisation; University of Applied Sciences in Saarbrücken (htw saar) is a family-friendly university: Already top 4 in Industrial Engineering in CHE2020.
