Special features regarding teaching

The mechanical engineering faculty offers sound technical training in the fields of mechanical engineering and automotive engineering at bachelor's and master's level. Department graduates can embark upon their careers as specialists or managers in regional or even international companies. The faculty's Master´s degree programmes offer specialisations and the opportunity to apply their scientific knowledge and necessary skills, which prepares them for a subsequent doctorate degree. Numerous instructors from industry ensure that the content is up-to-date.

Special features regarding the international orientation

International profiling in many Bachelor’s degree programmes enables stays abroad in the 6th or 7th semester (profiling) and/or during the practical semester or preparation of the Bachelor’s thesis; Cooperation and lecturer exchange (including the design of digital teaching formats) with the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, USA; Exchange of students, lecturers and researchers with Universidad La Laguna, Spain; Cooperation with CNAM/GARAC in France, mutual excursions and mixed foreign-language modules of the respective other university, exchange projects with recognition

Special features regarding the equipment

Internships, lectures, final theses at technology centres (energy, production & logistics). Research facilities, e.g. glass-walled battery factory, diagnostic methods (scanning electron microscope, computer tomograph, material testing machines, etc.); Various additive manufacturing processes and scanning devices for reverse engineering; PC equipment with modern CAD systems (CREO, CATIA, NX, Solid Works, Inventor) as well as simulation software and tools; Access to many technical databases (e.g. norms, e-books, specialist journals); Library with 24-hour access to extensive literature

Special features regarding research and development

The key research area lightweight construction was established by the lightweight construction competence centre (LLK) and a lightweight construction cluster (LC). The LLK is a research institute with well-equipped laboratories for R&D projects in the fields of material mechanics, operational stability, numerical simulation, lightweight construction. The energy and environmental technology research focus with its own technology centre in Ruhstorf an der Rott continuously researches new technologies, including as part of international projects. Cooperation with the electrical engineering faculty at the technology centre PuLS for production and logistics systems.

Support for founders

Business start-ups by students in engineering have always been an essential pillar of our society. That is why the department is particularly committed to supporting students who want to establish a start-up. The function of the department’s own start-up ambassador, who uses examples to explain the steps, opportunities and risks involved in establishing a company, but also offers individual advice, keeps this topic firmly anchored in the department.

Other special features

Integrated into a unique industrial production environment; Nationwide 1st undergraduate Bachelor of Additive Manufacturing and Commercial Vehicle Technology (with commercial (road) vehicles, (earthmoving) construction machinery + international commercial-vehicle technology); Research focuses: Lightweight construction and materials sciences (cluster and competence centre + annual conference), energy and sustainability (Technology Centre for Energy) and production/logistics/production and manufacturing engineering (Technology Centre for Production and Logistics); Int. research projects on lightweight construction, materials, energy, eatteries and sensor technology, Interdisciplinary student projects
