Special features regarding teaching

One special feature of the Mechanical Engineering degree course is its structure as an 8-semester Diplom degree course with one full practical semester. The selected structure of the three-semester stage I studies followed by three specialisations offers students an additional orientation phase and a specialisation in line with personal interests. The practical semester as well as the 4-month Diplom project are other unique features which give students in-depth insight into professional practice.

Special features regarding the equipment

The faculty's technical equipment is higher than average and is praised by colleagues from other higher education institutions as well as industrial partners. Above and beyond a large fleet of equipment, the modern, well-equipped laboratories and rooms in technical centres should be pointed out as well. Listing all of the different equipment would go beyond the scope of this description. Please see the faculty's website which provides a partial list of the existing equipment.

Special features regarding research and development

The wide range of current research projects makes it very difficult to select and describe just a few. The university research information system offers a good overview. The annual research reports provide an overview of the numerous research projects. Research focuses on the fields of Production Engineering, Ergonomics, Textile Engineering, Materials Engineering, Construction Engineering and Tribology.

Support for founders

The SAXEED start-up network at WHZ offers students, academic staff and alumni free support in setting up a business and exploiting research and development results. This is implemented with lectures and workshops, topic-specific events, the start-up exchange and with a co-working and creative space.

Other special features

Students of the faculty represent a large portion of the members of the student racing team which has been participating with great success in the international Formula Student competition for more than 10 years. In addition to technical specialisation, this encourages an interdisciplinary approach, the ability to work in a team and internationalisation.
