Special features regarding teaching

The professors on the Gummersbach campus teach in a practice- and project-oriented way, students acquire knowledge as part of a team from the first semester. "ProfiL²" stands for a comprehensive concept of project-oriented teaching throughout the TH Cologne. "L hoch zwei" here means that both teaching staff and students must be inspired by cooperative forms of learning and content. The department thus consistently focuses on the students' individual competencies.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The TH Cologne sees itself as an international university. It sees the growing diversity and internationality of its students as an enrichment and promotes it. The support, education and training of refugees is a special concern of the university. It is committed to this goal through numerous initiatives. If you have only have level B2 German skills so far, you can apply for the DSH preparation course at the TH Cologne. The DSH course is free for refugees.

Special features regarding the equipment

Depending on the module, the degree courses are also offered at the Cologne International School of Design in state-of-the-art buildings on the Gummersbach campus or, in the case of the master's degree in Product Design and Process Development, at the Cologne International School of Design. This applies both to the room fittings and the laboratory equipment.

Special features regarding research and development

There are many research projects and focuses. Among other things, the instruction and research location:metabolon is operated at the Waste Disposal Centre in Leppe. In the Innovation Hub, companies partner with instructors and students from the Cologne University of Applied Sciences to explore the challenges of the digital future. The many sponsorship awards for outstanding academic achievements is a reflection of the university's close cooperation with regional companies.

Support for founders

We are happy when students and alumni put their ideas into practice and we support this in different ways. We can confidentially discuss ideas and test their potential. We arrange contacts within the TH and to our network partners. We provide support in applying for grants and scholarships and we arrange contacts with business and science for the company founders. From the 20/21 winter semester, we offer company founders an office space in the StartUp Box for 12 months, including access to laboratories and an intensive coaching programme.

Other special features

As the first public university in North Rhine-Westphalia and one of very few in Germany, the TH Cologne has had a quality management system (ISO 9001) in place on the Gummersbach campus since 2011.
