Special features regarding teaching

In the "Teaching and Learning in Witten" concept, the students undertake their own studies. The faculty supports students in finding their own way by offering advice and mentoring for personal development in the community of teaching staff and students as well as with partners in business. In line with this concept, dialogue-oriented, seminar-style courses are primarily offered in order to continuously train communication, artistic and reflective skills in addition to professional competence.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The faculty builds on a consistent international orientation in research and teaching. Teaching here focuses, on the one hand, on the two English-language Master’s programmes and two Bachelor’s programmes currently in the accreditation process, and on the other, the expansion of international double degree and exchange programmes at BA and MA level. In addition, renowned lecturers from abroad make a significant contribution to the teaching profile of the faculty. Attention is paid to the international profile of new appointments in particular. In addition, students regularly organise international conferences.

Special features regarding the equipment

In addition to access to the literature databases usually available at universities (e.g. JSTOR, EbscoHost), the university offers additional e-book collections. There is also access to specialist databases such as STATISTA and Scopus. All students can use the campus licences for Office365plus and for reference management programmes. In addition, the open source software "R" is generally used. Through integration into the EDUROAM network, students have worldwide WIFI access at all participating educational institutions. Several classrooms have video conferencing systems to enable hybrid teaching.

Special features regarding research activities

Research in the faculty is consistently transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary. For example, the Witten Institute for Family Business (www.wifu.de) researches family entrepreneurship from a psychological, sociological, economic and legal point of view, while the Institute of Institutional and Social Change (ISIC) looks at social challenges such as global warming and threats to democracy from a philosophical, political science and economic perspective. There are also close research collaborations with the Faculty of Health.

Support for founders

Business start-ups are a central concern of the faculty. From the first semester, aspects of starting a business are part of the curriculum, for instance in the award-winning “GründerWerkstatt” (Start-up Workshop) or the Start-Up Creation course. With the Entrepreneurship Centre Witten (EZW), the faculty has its own start-up hub with corresponding early-phase accelerator programmes. The EZW is part of the “Gründerstipendium.NRW” (North Rhine-Westphalia start-up grant) and supports those interested in starting a business in all aspects, with a focus on sustainable or social business start-ups (including co-working space and infrastructure).

Other special features

The faculty has set itself the goal of strategically increasing gender diversity. It aims to appoint 25% female professors in the status group of professor by 2025. The faculty has implemented gender-appropriate language in everyday university life and has been focusing all of its teaching, research and practical transfer activities on "sustainable social development" since 2020. It is transforming into a sustainable organisation: Most sustainable new wooden building in Germany, efficient waste separation concept and adjustments to the travel policy to promote public transport.
