Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

Strong interdisciplinary character and work at the interface to other disciplines: emphasis on comparative aspects of political science, international focus as a result of the numerous academics and international lectures (MUN conferences), comparative political systems; Comparative political culture, governance; Policy Area Analysis; European integration, comparative foreign policy, and EU foreign policy; Identity theory and comparative regionalisation; Totalitarianism/extremism; In addition, online-supported seminars are offered on a regular basis, and new forms of teaching are tested.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Strong interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary character and work at the interface with other social sciences. Disciplines: Emphasis on comparative aspects of political science, international character thanks to English-language courses, combination of theory and practical applications as a result of the option to do field research/research internship, teaching and application of methods in the context of an empirical master's thesis, testing of new teaching methods.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Partner university of the DAAD for the Helmut-Schmidt Programme, within the framework of which 8–10 Master's degree students from developing and emerging countries come to Passau every year for full-time study. Recommended stays abroad (internship, study programme, work placement, thesis, research placement) at various international partner universities or practice facilities.

Special features regarding the equipment

Integration of virtual courses through the Bavarian Virtual University (VHB), 72 subject-specific online databases, access to e-books in the relevant databases, and, in addition, open access agreements with the publishers Wiley, Cambridge Press and de Gryter as part of the project Evidence Based Systems, which allows instant access to all the publishers' e-books. Participation in the project DEAL (spearheaded by the German Rectors' Conference, HRK) to open up access to further databases (Elsevier, Springer Nature, Wiley).

Analysis (of western) regimes including the USA (parliaments, political parties, interest groups); Extremism and totalitarianism research in Germany/Europe/the USA; Federalism research; Social and party research; Multi-level governance; Political science media research; Political communications research; Political philosophy, comparative foreign policy research and EU foreign policy; Comparative regionalisation research; European integration research, Southeast Europe and Arab nations.

Other special features

The choice of electives and specialisations in the degree programmes are numerous: comparative governance research, comparative political cultural research, (ancient) political philosophy, European focus, foreign policy research, internationality expressed through structural partnerships, such as in the Helmut Schmidt Programme of the DAAD or in the double-degree programme with the Andrássy University of Budapest and with the University of Ljubljana; DAAD project on Tunisia, run by the International Summer Academies with Texas A&M University.
