Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

With Approx. 1,700 students, IfPol is one of the most important university training facilities in the subject of Political Science in Germany. Successful research is combined with a comprehensive and internationally oriented course offering. Five BAA degree programmes (plus teacher training) ensure the complete coverage of the discipline (Political Systems, Political Theory, Comparative Political Science, International Relations) within teaching and open up numerous opportunities for specialisation and elective options.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

The Master's degree programmes at the Institute of Political Science have a strong research focus. The "Sustainability & Democracy" Master's programme introduces students to the institute's two key research areas and enables them to participate in research projects. The institute strengthened its international focus with the Comparative Public Governance and International and European Governance programmes. The Institute for Political Science (IfPol) takes account of the increasing international and cross-cultural requirements of the globalised world of work.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The four study programmes (two BAs, two MAs) of the Institute of Political Science in cooperation with a French and a Dutch university exemplify the international orientation of the institute, at which a large number of foreign students are enrolled when compared to the university on the whole. But also in the other study programmes, the institute supports its students' stays abroad through its own Erasmus office. "Free movers" are also supported by the institute's student-friendly culture of recognition.

Special features regarding the equipment

Together, the Institute for Sociology and the Institute for Political Science form the Social Sciences teaching unit at the University of Münster. The teaching unit manages two common computer pools in which all students undergo application-oriented method and statistics training and are trained in the relevant social sciences software (R, SPSS, etc.). The teaching unit also operates a CATI laboratory for conducting telephone surveys, in which students are regularly involved. The institute also has a virtual classroom.

Special features regarding research activities

Research at the Institute for Political Science (IfPol) is divided into the three blocks of governing, civil society and global and regional governance. IfPol is also discussing renewing its profile under the heading "Authority and plurality". The institute is involved in the Cluster of Excellence Religion and Politics and is involved in several interdisciplinary centres that deal with, among other things, sustainability research, European gender studies, the role of religion in modern societies, municipal financial policy and Internet research.

Other special features

The IfPol is an institutional member of the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR). The majority of academics at the IfPol are mostly members of the German Association for Political Science (DVPW). The IfPol was also the host of the 23rd DVPW congress as well as the ECPR Joint Sessions of Workshops. In the summer of 2014 there was also the 11th International Conference of the International Society for Third Sector Research in Münster, which was organised by academics from the IfPol. The IfPol has a very active sponsorship association with a wide range of programmes.
