Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

Courses on all key aspects of modern political science; Teaching is closely linked to research, internationally focused courses: Courses are taught in English, including by foreign guest lecturers; Application-oriented education in statistics and methods of empirical political research (e.g. in survey and electoral research); Interactive and innovative teaching methods, including the integration of e-learning (Moodle, BigBlueButton) into classroom teaching; Career-oriented seminars presented by lecturers with professional experience (e.g. in political journalism, market and opinion research).

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Highly research-oriented teaching, interdisciplinary and internationally focused offerings: Teaching partnerships (e.g. with RMU, sociology, economics), teaching courses in English, including courses taught by foreign guest lecturers; Application-oriented education in statistics and quantitative methods that can be certified; Interactive and innovative teaching methods, including the integration of e-learning (Moodle, BigBlueButton) into classroom teaching; Focus on the application of theoretical and methodological knowledge (study module) as well as on the acquisition of professionally relevant knowledge (flexible practical module that can be structured individually).

Special features regarding the international orientation

Internationalization at Home: in close cooperation between the Institute of Political Science and Faculty 02, numerous courses are offered in English along with a certificate for international teaching competence. An international summer school will begin starting with the summer semester in 2024. The application for membership in the UNAI has been submitted. Regular workshops with colleagues from abroad. Internationalization abroad: Numerous opportunities to study and complete internships abroad on the basis of Erasmus+, Promos and as part of the FORTHEM Alliance.

Special features regarding the equipment

The university has a powerful Centre for Data Processing, which offers excellent technical services for both students and teachers. In addition to its physical literature resources, the University Library has an exceptionally extensive electronic journal library and all major national and international subject-specific databases. All these materials are freely available to students and teachers alike. Specialised reference books are also increasingly being purchased as e-books for convenient simultaneous use by multiple people.

Special features regarding research activities

National and international individual and joint projects on topics such as the radical right in Europe, populism, research on elections, participation and attitude, experimental methodology, etc.; Studies at the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence, which is located at the University of Mainz and the TU Darmstadt, cooperation with research associations and focal points outside and within the JGU (including interdisciplinary public policy). The significant research activities are reflected in the teaching in the two Master's degree programmes "Empirical Democracy Research" and "Political Economy".

Courses on topics such as climate policy, sustainability, limits to growth, water scarcity, policy in the Anthropocene, and political education for sustainable development, political economics of climate change; Participation in the university's 'Future Module' with the aim of integrating climate and sustainability education in an interdisciplinary and action-oriented manner into university teaching in the long term; Participation in the lecture cycle "Visions for Climate"; Inter-disciplinary development of a sustainability certificate for students as an additional qualification in addition to studies in a particular subject.
