Further information provided by the department

Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

The Political Science department focuses its teaching on the EU and multi-level governance in Europe, IR and peace and conflict research, and environmental policy and sustainable development. Students also receive in-depth methodological training and are introduced to numerous contacts in Germany and abroad. All of the department's professors were appointed during or after the 2016/17 academic year, which makes for a very dynamic learning environment. There is a very good tutor-student ratio, which ensures students have good support.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

The Political Science department focuses its teaching on the EU and multi-level governance in Europe, IR and peace and conflict research, and environmental policy and sustainable development. At the MA level, the MA in European Studies and the MA in Peace and Conflict Studies are overseen by the Political Science department, which impacts, in particular, the way methods are taught as well as the support provided for final theses. Political science is not heavily involved in the MA in Social Sciences.

Special features regarding the international orientation

The department has a very broad and intensive network of partnerships for opportunities to study abroad, focusing mainly on Central and Eastern Europe, as well as Latin America and Asia in the Peace and Conflict Studies degree programme. Furthermore, the MA in PACS has received 10 full scholarships for students from the Global South each year since 2021 and this will continue until 2028. This is a total value of about 1.7 million euros.

Special features regarding research activities

The department is involved in numerous research projects funded by various bodies. There are national and international networks in research projects, for example, on failures in international politics, EU-Brexit policy or German and European bioeconomy policy. The department is active in national and international academic and scientific associations, including ECPR, German Association for Political Economy (DVPW), ISA, IPPA, EGPA, IPSA, RSA, IUFRO and others. Since 2021, the MA programme in Peace and Conflict Studies has been funded by the DAAD with 10 scholarships awarded per year.

Other special features

With its teaching/research focus on IB/peace and conflict research, terrorism, EU multi-level governance, Brexit and sustainable development, the Political Science department has strong unique selling points that are very attractive to students interested in these topics. Current research topics are regularly integrated into teaching.
