Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

Teaching combines regular topics (in particular, fundamental concepts) and current topics; The course schedule takes account of students' wishes. Because of the wide array of courses, there are numerous elective choices between and within modules. There is a strong focus on research, a wide array of methodologies, and interdisciplinary opportunities with the university's many other institutes. Limits on the number of participants in seminars ensures small class sizes and good tutor-student ratios.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

The Master's degree, which has a research focus, includes a research internship, a research seminar, and information about presentation and writing skills. There are numerous elective options between and within modules. The institute's course offerings are rounded out by courses offered by a number of other university institutions to form a strong interdisciplinary network. The curriculum includes the option for a minor, which can also be completed at other universities, e.g. as part of a study abroad. The key features are the use of different methodologies, small class sizes, and good tutor-student ratios.

Special features regarding the international orientation

At the university level, the 4EU+ University Alliance offers students at eight European universities virtual mobility through the 4EU+ online courses. In addition to extensive opportunities from the university, the institute offers a broad exchange programme and supports incoming and outgoing students with its own Erasmus team. A double degree is currently being developed within the framework of the 4EU+ University Alliance. Guest researchers are integrated into teaching and research through their own courses, workshops and lectures.

Special features regarding the equipment

The modern campus is currently being expanded (additional modern, well-equipped seminar rooms, new canteen). Well-equipped library sections of the University Library with computer equipment, smart boards, overhead scanners, etc., fully IT-equipped group work rooms and private individual work spaces; more than 330 subject-specific databases and 154,000 licensed e-journals (more than 6900 professional journals). Department seminar rooms with multimedia and video conferencing systems. A wide range of software is available online and in several PC pools on campus.

Special features regarding research activities

Numerous ongoing research projects, including on militarisation, autocratisation, BTI, conflict research, comparative foreign policy and security policy, cybersecurity, strategic migration policy, global governance, urban policy, police practices, governance and statehood, climate, environmental, biodiversity, social and economic policy, solidarity in times of crisis, policy theories, government balance sheets, party competition, participation research, political psychology and political Communication. Regional key areas: Germany, EU, South Asia, East Asia and Southeast Asia, USA and Ibero-America.

Other special features

The IPW is characterized by numerous student initiatives supported by the institute (e.g. Heidelberg Institute for International Conflict Research, Heidelberg Forum for International Security, The Academic Association for Security Studies (BSH), and Arbeitskreis Lehre Vervielfalten). And there is close cooperation between student representatives and the institute. There is a comprehensive evaluation and quality management system.
