Special features regarding teaching in the bachelor's degree programme

High value of research-based learning: Individual module for the introduction to academic work, research seminars in the compulsory elective area; Solid basic training: Overview lectures on all key sub-areas of political science, broad range of in-depth seminars; In the single-subject bachelor's degree mobility window and wide scope for organising studies thanks to the large selection of General Studies courses, which can be used to specialise in a subject, for an interdisciplinary focus, or to gain a practical introduction.

Special features regarding teaching in the master's programmes

Teaching qualitative and quantitative research methods is very important for all Master's degree programmes. While the MA in Political Science is aimed at students with broad political science interests who will benefit from the research strength of Bremen's political science programme, the MA programmes in International Relations, Social Policy and European Politics allow for a specialisation in political science.

Special features regarding the international orientation

Large number of Bachelor's Political Science students completing a non-compulsory study period abroad every year (approx. 20–30 students take part in an Erasmus exchange, plus many internships abroad). In the International Relations Master's degree programme, about two-thirds of the students come from abroad. Master's programmes have compulsory and elective studies abroad options. In the Bremen International Graduate School of Social Sciences (BIGSSS), a large proportion of doctoral candidates (> 45%) come from abroad. BA in Integrated European Studies: A compulsory semester abroad and learning a foreign language are part of the curriculum.

The department also has a computer room with 60 workstations where, for example, statistics exercises can be carried out. There are also several multimedia small group study rooms.

Special features regarding research activities

Research at the IPW covers the breadth of Political Science. The research focus areas of the IPW lie in the fields of Comparative Welfare State Research, International Relations, European Integration, Methodological Research, International Political Economy and Discourse Research. In addition to numerous individual sponsorships, the IPW is significantly involved in the "Bremen Graduate School for Social Sciences" and contributes to the German Research Foundation (DFG) Collaborative Research Centre "Global Dynamics of Social Policy", in which a good sixty scientists have been working since 2018.

Other special features

Bremen's political science department is one of the most research-intensive locations for the subject in Germany. It has contributed significantly to the title of "Excellence" that the University of Bremen held until 2019. In addition, the political science department in Bremen is characterised by methodological and theoretical pluralism, research that looks beyond Europe and the work of promising junior academics.
