The study of Law with completion of the first state exam is divided into four sections: 1. For the intermediate examination, eight exams are written on the key fields of law within the first three to four semesters, of which six must be passed by the end of the sixth semester. 2. The focus of the following study phase includes practical sessions for advanced students in Private Law, Public Law and Criminal Law, in addition to courses in various sub-fields. 3. Later on in the course, students choose a specialisation. The thematic focus of these areas can vary between universities. The specialisation represents approx. 10% of the total course of study. At the Universität Gießen, the following areas of specialisation can be studied: - German and International Family and Inheritance Law - Employment Law and Social Law - Commercial Law - European Law and International Law - Environmental Law and Public Commercial Law - Criminal Justice Law and Criminology 4. The exam preparation at the end of the course (UniRep) aims to consolidate the course material in order to prepare for the First State Examination. At the same time, courses in other fields of Law must also be attended. The programme is supplemented by basic and introductory events, events for teaching methodology and for key qualifications as well as foreign language courses. Furthermore, three work placements of one month each at a court as well as two further institutions must be completed.
