Target group
The study of Musicology at the JGU traditionally conveys a broad access to the subject, consistently integrating the sub-disciplines of the subject, which links the academic training with practice-oriented elements, as well as expanding on and reinforcing Musicology using a decidedly cultural-historical orientation. The central concept of the Master's degree course in Musicology exists in a clear theoretical and application-oriented consolidation of essential core competences of musicological thought and work, as well as a broad placement in cultural-historical subject and methodological discourse.
Annotation
If the Bachelor degree certificate is not available by the application deadline, but at least 135 credit points can be demonstrated: Submit a certificate of study and examinations and the average grade achieved so far. (This certificate must be issued by the relevant higher education, original or officially authenticated copy). After enrolment, the diploma must be submitted. If the degree was obtained abroad: officially authenticated copy of a certificate of recognition (responsible: Student Service - Admission International).
Admission requirements
Bachelor's degree with a standard period of study of at least 6 semesters at a university in Germany or abroad with a Musicology component of at least 60 credit points. whereby at least 36 CPs must cover the field of Historical Musicology or an equivalent degree with an equivalent level of subject-specific pass/fail courses and graded courses. Sufficient proficiency in one other modern language or Latin is required. The ability to play an instrument is highly recommended for the Musicology course. A well-founded knowledge of Music Theory is also required. Consulting the student advisory service on the subject of Musicology prior to starting the Master's course is strongly recommended.
