Target group

Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies is a cultural studies course, which includes a thorough linguistic education in several languages of Islam. The special key areas in Tübingen are the intellectual history of classical Islam and the history and cultures of the modern Middle East. The focus is on cultures and languages of the Islamic Middle East of the past and present. In addition to this regional approach, other methodological approaches are also used to contextualise academic questions. The course provides an overview of various methodological approaches in history and social sciences combined with a solid philological education. Methods for the evaluation of source texts from a wide range of text genres are consolidated in seminars and tutorials\; from mediaeval manuscripts to modern media. The key research areas of the two professorships of our department are the intellectual history of classical Islam and the modern Middle East, both of which are reflected in the profile of the Master’s degree programme. An important area here is the intellectual history of Islam of the past and present. The examination of classical Islamic heritage is a prominent topic, but modern debates are also being discussed intensively. Our programme requires a good knowledge of the Arabic language, which is consolidated further throughout the course. Depending on previous knowledge and interests, students choose further cultural language of the Islamic Middle East. Our department offers a comprehensive programme in Persian and Turkish (including Ottoman); Greek or Hebrew may also be selected.
