Annotation
Dresden University of Fine Arts is the only university in Europe where all theatre equipment professions (scenic painting, theatre sculpture, costume design, make-up) are taught together. This degree course has been continually updated to the latest technical standards over 50 years of development. The concept is to combine craft skills and artistic studies and to teach across disciplines in order to get as close as possible to the real processes in theatre with all its current demands. The degree course with a duration of four years concludes with a Diploma degree as a designer in one of the following fields of study: Scenic Painting, Theatre Sculpture, Costume Design, Make-up. From the winter semester 2020/21 onwards, the university degree programme has been called Theatre Design (until then it was the university of applied sciences degree course Stage Set Design).
Admission requirements
The admission requirement for the university of applied sciences degree course Theatre Design is a pre-study work placement with a duration of three weeks to five months, depending on subject area, at a theatre, in film, television or a related medium in an area of work relating to the desired area of study. If proof is provided of professional training (e.g. scene painting) in the corresponding branch of study, the work placement is not required. With proof of employment in related teaching professions (for theatre sculpture, stonemason, wood sculptor. For scene painting: stage decorator, church decorator, for stage make-up: Theatre hairdressing) a reduction of the length of the work placement can be granted. For admission to the area of study Costume Design, proof must be provided of completed training in men's or women's tailoring or comparable qualifications.
