Annotation

A focus on research and optimal support in academic and professional qualification for a career as a historian are the distinguishing features of the Master's degree course in History at Bielefeld University. The Master's degree course in History enables a broad and in-depth study of many historical topics and current research questions. The teaching of theoretical and methodological skills as well as transnational and comparative perspectives are particularly important. The Master's degree course in History covers the entire breadth of the subject of History, but at the same time enables students to specialise by choosing a focus area that is identified as a specialisation on the degree certificate. Focus areas are offered for the research specialisations of the Department of History. Currently, there are focus areas for the following: Ancient History History of the Pre-Modern Era Culture/History: Politics – Image – Art Society – Knowledge – Environment Global and Interrelated History Historical Cultures Global Cultures (in cooperation with the University of Bologna, offered in English) Bielefeld University is one of the internationally renowned locations for historical research. “Bielefeld School” is not only a trademark for modern, theory-driven historical research, but above all a place for lively academic discussion. Study groups jointly organised by students and lecturers, weekly research colloquia, the Bielefeld Graduate School in History and Sociology funded by the Excellence Initiative, a collaborative research centre and numerous international collaborations with universities in Europe and further afield create an inspiring and collaborative environment in which Master's students are actively involved at an early stage. The Master of Arts in History aims to prepare students not only for historians’ "traditional" occupational fields – museums, archives, universities – but also for work in media, public relations, foundations, education and knowledge management in companies. The work area "History as a Profession" offers all Master's students comprehensive advice accompanying their studies on possible occupational fields and also provides contacts to and work placements in appropriate institutions and facilities.
