Start Date: August/September 2024 (Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis)
About the project:
The duplication and functional divergence of transcription factors drives many innovations during evolution. Thus, this DFG-funded 3-year project aims to understand the molecular basis of transcription factor evolution in yeast. In this project, you will characterize and systematically compare a large set of evolutionary related TFs. It will enable you to work with cutting-edge omics techniques, as well as to establish new assays and perform computational analysis. More details on the actual project will be provided during the interview.
About the “Biochemistry of Gene Regulation” research group:
After a Postdoc in the Barkai Lab at the Weizmann Institute of Science (Israel), I established my own Group in 2022 on the Biochemistry of Gene Regulation at Constructor University (Bremen).
In our dynamic and international group, we aspire to understand the one of the most fundamental processes in all eukaryotic cells, the regulation of gene expression, by leveraging the experimental versatility of yeast and the recent advances in computational biology. Experimentally, we combine classical genetics/ cloning with CRISPR-Cas9-based gene editing as well as omics techniques, like mass spectrometry and genome-wide profiling. Computationally, we analyze our own large data sets and try to integrate results from classical and machine-learning based bioinformatics. Our small group also allows for close mentoring and provides the freedom to explore creative ideas.
What we are looking for:
- MSc in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, or related field
- Highly motivated and reliable scientist
- Communicative and enthusiastic team player
- Rigorous thinker not afraid of challenging conventional Ideas
Of note:
- Experience with yeast or next generation sequencing is not required but helpful.
- Prior coding knowledge is not required, but you should be eager to learn relevant languages and tools.
- We are an English-speaking lab; German is not required but probably beneficial outside the lab.
How to apply:
Please send a short cover letter (1 page), a short CV (1-2 pages), your transcripts (BSc and MSc) and two reference letters to my email address (fjonas@constructor.university) and use the subject line “Application for PhD position 2024-1”.
